The fort looks as though it were made from the very sand that surrounds Jaisalmer, giving it that golden sheen in the afternoon light. 99 bastions encircle the twisting and turning lanes where shops are draped in spectacular embroideries. The 12th century construction is layered with three walls, from the solid stone blocks of the lowest bastions that were reinforced with loose rubble, to the inner walls where the Rajput once hurled oil and water onto their enemies.
